FIBERNET BY ROCK FALLS UTILITIES

What is FIBERNET?

Rock Falls is proud of our city-owned utilities, now including fiber internet. What’s the difference between traditional internet and FIBERNET? Traditional internet uses age-old cable TV infrastructure to transmit data through coaxial (or coax) cable. Rock Falls FIBERNET uses cutting-edge technology to deliver your internet on fiber optic line.

So, what’s that mean for you?

  • Internet speeds up to 50 times faster than traditional internet. Compare speeds.

  • More bandwidth, allowing more data to travel faster. No more competing with your family’s or neighbor’s devices during heavy demand times!

  • More reliability. Fiber cables do not carry electricity like coax cables, which makes it more reliable and reduces the risk for interference from electronic or radio signals.

  • Safer internet. Fiber is more difficult to tap than traditional coax internet.

FIBERHOODS

Is FIBERNET Available Where I Live?

Rock Falls FIBERNET internet service will be available to residents within the city, as well as Rock Falls electric customers outside city limits.

To deploy fiber internet to residents, we’re using a “Fiberhood” model. We’ve divided our service area into 26 Fiberhoods, with approximately 250 homes in each Fiberhood.

When 45% of the residences within a Fiberhood have signed-up for Rock Falls FIBERNET the build out will take place. There is no commitment or deposit required to sign-up. Once the 45% target is met, a $100 installation fee will be collected.

Better Speeds. Better Service. Better for the community.

How can I use Rock Falls FIBERNET for my phone service?

What's VoIP?

VoIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in more common terms phone service over the Internet.

With FIBERNET internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company or as part of a high priced cable company package.

Why Switch?

Four good reasons to switch to VoIP

  1. Lower Monthly Rates & Fees
VoIP is available at much lower prices than traditional phones because the technology you need is built into your FIBERNET internet connection.
  2. Unlimited Local & Long Distance
VoIP calls go from point to point over the internet so all calls are technically a local call. This is why VoIP providers can offer all-inclusive calling plans for a low flat monthly fee.
  3. Premium Features Come Standard
Most VoIP providers offer free features that you would pay additional fees for with traditional phone providers.
  4. Enhanced Flexibility & Scalability
You can get specialized plans designed for your specific needs and make changes to your plan by adding or deleting features to fit your life.

What Do I Need?

When it comes to VoIP, there is a minimal amount of hardware required to get you connected to your new phone system. First and foremost, you need quality internet service through Rock Falls FIBERNET. Additionally, you will need an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) to convert your current home phone into a VoIP-optimized phone if you do not wish to purchase an IP phone. These adapters are normally provided for free by your residential VoIP provider and are easy to set up.

Can I Keep My Current Number?

The answer is yes, you can keep your existing number when switching to a VoIP phone service. Keeping your old number while switching to a new provider is called “portability”. The FCC recently ruled that all VoIP service providers should offer portability. When you are researching VoIP providers make sure to check if they offer it for free or if there is a fee.
